With over a decade of experience behind the lens, I've explored numerous locations, each with its own unique charm. Based in Rotterdam, I am constantly on the lookout for distinctive and accessible spots that not only add character to my photographs, but also offer a sense of comfort to my clients.

This journey has inspired me to curate a collection of the 5 best photo spots in or around Rotterdam - a selection that ensures both visual appeal and a welcoming ambience for those I work with. I would like to share these beautiful locations with you, giving you an insight into the environments that are ideal for your next photo shoot in Rotterdam.

City Hall Rotterdam

Stadhuis Rotterdam is a city hall located in the heart of Rotterdam on the Coolsingel. Surrounded by contemporary architecture, this building stands out for its classic architecture. Its beautiful façade makes a great backdrop for elegant photo shoots - I have seen many wedding photos taken near the main entrance. I have used this picturesque facade as a backdrop for my own photographic assignments. Some examples are shown below.

What many overlook is the hidden gem inside - the inner garden of the Stadhuis, which is open to all visitors. Surprisingly, there are no restrictions on photography here, allowing you to bring your creative ideas to life. The beauty of this garden lies in its versatility; it offers a multitude of angles and perspectives, each a canvas for capturing captivating moments. I recall the delightful session with the members of Cinco en Clave, where I created visuals for their band's website and promotional materials.

But words can only convey so much - I invite you to experience it for yourself!

Willemsbrug Bridge

When tourists explore Rotterdam, they often visit iconic landmarks such as the Cube Houses and the Market Hall for their unique architecture. While these structures undoubtedly define Rotterdam's skyline, I would like to draw attention to lesser-known locations with photogenic potential.

Not far from the Cube Houses is the Willemsbrug Bridge. At first glance, it might not seem to have much potential, but as you get closer, you start to see how the bridge's red columns can add a unique interest to the pictures. Especially at night, when illuminated by lights, these columns add character to Rotterdam's skyline.

Shooting a model against this backdrop was a fun challenge. I love the beautiful colour contrast between the dark blue sky and the bright red columns.

The Luchtsingel

Staying with the bridge theme, there's another exciting bridge not far from Rotterdam Central Station - the Luchtsingel, located in the northern part of Rotterdam. This unique wooden bridge, painted a vibrant yellow, stands out in the city.

Surrounded by modern buildings on one side and railway tracks on the other, this is the perfect spot for street-style photo shoots. It offers plenty of cool angles and bright, colourful spaces to play with.

As you cross the bridge towards the tracks and descend the stairs, you'll come across a massive wall covered in bold red graffiti. It served as an excellent backdrop for one of my clients who wanted something that matched their personality and style, while also representing their view of Rotterdam.

This place is a mix of modernity and vibrant street art - a true reflection of Rotterdam's diverse character, just waiting for your lens to capture its essence.

Historic Delfshaven

Did you know that there's a small part of the old city right here in Rotterdam? During the Second World War, most of the city was destroyed, but a few parts survived. One of them is Historic Delfshaven.

Stepping into this area feels like stepping into another Dutch city, with its charming canal-lined street reminiscent of places like Amsterdam or Utrecht. Everything has remained the same since before the war, keeping a piece of history alive in the heart of Rotterdam.

Historic Delfshaven is a cosy place with a canal, old wooden boats, classic brick houses, a historic church and even a windmill and a hand-operated lift bridge - it truly captures the essence of traditional Dutch life.

This place is perfect for romantic couples photoshoots, especially in winter when the Christmas lights add a magical touch. If you are looking for a classic Dutch old town atmosphere without being too far from Rotterdam, Historic Delfshaven is the place to be.

The Hoek Van Holland

You might not immediately associate the Hoek Van Holland with Rotterdam, but I wanted to highlight it because of its proximity. What's fantastic about this beach is that it's only a metro ride from the centre of Rotterdam, which takes about 40 minutes! The modernised line takes you straight to the beach.

This beach is a haven for nature lovers looking for a quiet seaside setting. Easy access to the metro eliminates the need for a car, making it incredibly convenient for visitors.

I've chosen Hoek van Holland several times as a location for photo shoots, especially family sessions. It's a huge area surrounded by dunes, natural bushes and various paths leading down to the beach. Families love it here because there's plenty of space for the kids to run around and plenty of quiet spots for everyone to relax during the shoot.

I hope this article has been helpful and if you are looking for a unique, tailor-made photoshoot in Rotterdam, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing about your vision and working with you to (as the Rotterdammers say) - Make It Happen! ;)
